St.Kilda Cemetary

St Kilda Cemetery, located in Dandenong Road, East St.Kilda, in Melbourne, Australia. The Cemetery is one of Melbourne's oldest and was the principal burial place south of the Yarra River during the nineteenth century. It is closely associated with the settlement of greater Melbourne and, in particular, the settlement and development of St Kilda.

St Kilda Cemetery
Although there were earlier known burials in the St Kilda Cemetery, the first recorded burial is that of Charlotte Green aged 10 in 1855. The deed of grant from the Government to the Trustees was issued in 1861.

The 20 acre cemetery is bounded by Dandenong Rd, Alma Rd, Hotham St and Alexandra St. The grid plan drawn up by Robert Hoddle divided the cemetery into compartments for the major religious denominations and trustees were appointed to represent these denominations.

By 1900, grave sites were declared exhausted and the cemetery was closed. It was re-opened briefly in 1928 in an attempt to raise income, but by 1968 the cemetery was completely run down and financially insolvent and the trusteeship was transferred to the Necropolis, Springvale, the present administrators. In 1970, the lodge was demolished to make way for the Michaelis Lawn Cemetery.

Some well known citizens buried here include Alfred Deakin, our second Prime Minister, Baron Von Mueller, world famous botanist, Albert Jacka, World War I Victoria Cross winner and Annie, the sister of Mother Mary McKillop.
