Dog saves family from fire

A STAFFORDSHIRE terrier called Roxy has been credited with saving a Melbourne family from a house fire.

Mark Doyle's house at Upwey, in Melbourne's north, caught fire just after midnight.

But Mr Doyle, who had fallen asleep on the couch, was woken by the eight-year-old dog in time to save his baby daughter from the blaze.

"I just fell asleep to the Footy Show," he told ABC Radio.

"I woke up and the dog was giving me a bit of a rustle and I looked up and the roof was on fire.

"She's a sensational dog, she's beautiful - she saved us and our baby."

Mr Doyle said smoke alarms went off after Roxy's early warning.

A Country Fire Authority spokesman said the Doyles' two-storey weatherboard house was well ablaze when firefighters arrived.

About 30 firefighters worked for 40 minutes to douse the flames, which caused an estimated $200,000 damage to the house and destroyed a car

Blue heeler saves owner from alligator

PITTSBURGH: An Australian blue heeler which fought an alligator to protect an elderly woman has won the title Dog Hero of the Year in a US-wide annual award.

Two-year-old Blue saved Ruth Gay from the alligator and survived numerous injuries, the organisers of the annual Heinz Pet Products award said.

Mrs Gay, 85, was taking the dog for an evening walk along a canal behind her house last July when she slipped on wet grass and fell, breaking her nose and dislocating a shoulder. Blue lay at her side while she called for help.

Suddenly the dog growled and ran off into the darkness – sensing an alligator that had left the canal about 15m away, apparently attracted by Mrs Gay's calls.

Blue fended off the reptile, suffering many puncture wounds to his stomach. When Mrs Gay's daughter and son-in-law arrived home about an hour later, he led them to where she was lying.

"I heard the alligator and Blue fighting, and I thought Blue was dead," Mrs Gay said. "It wasn't until my daughter came home and I heard Blue barking that I realised he was still alive."
